151 Marjorie Edna Hail was born on July 5th, 1927 in Hood
River Oregon to Harold and Lela (Tomkins) Hail. Margie
grew up in Wind River Valley with her older brother
Harold (Emmit) and younger brother Kenneth. Margie
attended Carson Elementary School and Stevenson High
School. Margie was in the School Play and was a
Letterwomen.

During High School Margie met Ted Johnson and after she
graduated (1945) and Ted graduated in 1946, they got
married on March 10, 1948. (It was always a joke
between them that he married an older woman.) Barbara
Aker was the Maid of Honor and Jim Johnson was the Best
Man at the ceremony that was preformed at the church in
Carson. They honeymooned on the coast.

Their first house was in Carson at the corner of Smith
Beacon and Hot Springs. Steve was born on June 14,
1950, during the time they lived in this house. The
next house was on Hot Springs Avenue. Dave was born on
December 27, 1951 while they lived in Carson. The next
home was in Home Valley. Steve attended the Home Valley
one room school house for one year.

Daughter Betty Leann was born on July 9th, 1958. Betty
died of the severe flu in February of 1960. Three years
later in 1963, Margie's parents were killed in a car
wreck. These were very difficult years.

During the next years, life centered on the kid's
school activities as the kids grew up. Steve remembers
that "they always attended school events and activities
including baseball, football, basketball, National
Honors Society. At least one or the other if not both
parent was always there."

Margie worked her first job for the County Extension
Agent and then went to work for the Wind River Nursery.
She worked at the nursery for 23 years doing almost all
jobs including pulling and planting trees and in the
shipping office.

They were also supporting parents when Steve got
married in 1978 to Arlene Lord. Grandchildren came
along in 1980 (Melissa) and in 1982 (Briana). In 1982,
Dave married Lisa Ottis and became Dad to Allyssa and
Nicole.

During the 1970's, the friends and family began taking
golf trips. Jim and Ardis, Ben and Betty and later,
Fran and Harley took a week each summer to travel to
different golf courses around the Northwest. Ted and
Margie stayed in the six pack camper.

Margie retired in 1990 and Ted in 1991. They became
snowbirds for a few years and headed to Yuma to visit
family and friends. However, as the grandchildren got
older and became involved in sports and school, they
decided to stay home and attend the sporting events and
other school activities such as choir and band
concerts. Wherever the grandchildren were performing or
competing, Ted and Margie were there to support them.
Margie was "Grandma" to many children who played on
volleyball, softball and track teams. They were also
Grandma to Christina Morkore who was a foreign exchange
student living with Steve and Arlene for one year.

Hunting and fishing were important activities for the
Johnson Army and Margie always was one of the camp
cooks. Jim and Ardis, Fran and Harley and Ben and Betty
could always be found together, whether hunting,
fishing, hiking, camping at Goose Lake, visiting and
celebrating each other birthdays and holidays.

Margie loved to garden, read and try new recipes,
although she was always sure that it wouldn't be right.

Margie loved to watch the Price is Right and Wheel of
Fortune but her favorite was Country Club Dance. In the
early years, she could often be found teaching her boys
and later her grandchildren to dance to the swing
music. She also liked to read and Louis L 'Amour was
her latest favorite. She became a strong Mariners fan
and could always be found calling Betty Brader about
halfway through a game to discuss how they were playing
and how Itchee-row (as she pronounced it).

Margie loved her grand dog, Maggie. On very cold winter
days, she always sent Ted over to get the dog because
"It is probably too cold for Maggie to be outside."

Family was always central to Margie whether it was a
family dinner for birthdays or holiday, cutting and
wrapping meat during elk season or just a quiet evening
talking about the world. When you are a friend of the
Johnson's, you are family.

176 The church records of Vikor Church in Willmar, Minnesota say that he was one of the signers of the church constitution in 1876, but there are records indicating that he was in Norway in 1879, and the only record of passage I could find for him was for 1881. It is possible that he came to America, returned to Norway, and came back. We know that his brother, Jon, did this, but he did it after he had made some money here, and I wonder if Tore could have done well enough at such an early age to travel back and forth. 186 When her husband died in 1959 in Canada, the report of his death listed a son (Perry), and three daughters (Edith, Patricia, and Mattie).
However, the 1930 and 1940 census records show no sign of "Mattie".Perry did have a sister named Mattie - and his death report does list another sister (Edith Glur), so I am operating under the assumption that Mattie is NOT his daughter and that the death report was incorrect.
